Flik (Dave Foley) is an inventive ant who's always messing things up for his colony. His latest mishap was destroying the food stores that were supposed to be used to pay off grasshopper Hopper (Kevin Spacey). Now the strong-arming insect is demanding that the ants gather double the food -- or face annihilation. To avert disaster, Flik goes on a journey to recruit fighters to defend the colony. When he meets a band of high-flying circus insects, he thinks he's found his salvation.

Plot 

A colony of ants on a small island is forced to harvest and surrender all their crops to a clan of marauding grasshoppers. Among these ants is an oddity named Flik, who is ridiculed for using inventions to gather food. One day, Flik accidentally knocks loose the structure used to contain all the harvested crop. The grasshoppers arrive to claim their food. The head grasshopper, Hopper, is given the bad news and subsequently gives them another chance at harvesting the grasshoppers' food, on the condition that it be twice as much as before. When on trial for his blunder, Flik proposes the idea of vacating the island to find larger bugs to deal with the grasshoppers. The ants agree, but only to have Flik be ridden of so he won't mess things up again.

Flik leaves the island and ends up in a bug city, where he mistakes a group of circus bugs, who were discharged by their flea boss, for warriors. In turn, they mistake Flik for wanting them for a dinner theater job. When Flik and the circus bugs arrive on ant island, they eventually learn of their misunderstandings. Accusing Flik of misleading them, the circus bugs try to leave, but a bird soon attacks them and Flik, but they soon evade it and save Dot, the youngest daughter of the queen ant. The circus bugs are hailed heroes and Flik soon learns from the queen's eldest, Princess Atta, that Hopper was attacked by a bird in the past and therefore fears them. Flik recruits the bugs and the ants to build a bird in order to protect the island from the grasshoppers and cover up Flik's mistake.

Meanwhile, under a sombrero, the grasshoppers are having the time of their lives; so much that some of them question Hopper's choice to return to the island. When Hopper's brother Molt informs him of his clan's questioning, Hopper tells the clan that they will return to the island—not for the food but to make sure that the ants don't rebel. Meanwhile, the circus bugs have second thoughts on leaving the island, but their ex-boss, P.T. Flea, arrives, blowing Flik's cover and Princess Atta tells him to leave. Despondent, Flik and the circus bugs depart. Hopper and his goons return, but since the ants spent so much time preparing themselves against the grasshoppers, they only collect minimum food which doesn't meet Hopper's demand. Irate, Hopper takes over the island, captures the queen, and threatens to kill her.

When Dot overhears Hopper's murderous plan, she flies off-island to inform Flik, who becomes hesitant to return because of his status as an outcast. Dot and the circus bugs tell him that he has done so many good things, ultimately convincing Flik to return to ant island. When Flik and the circus bugs arrive, the circus bugs distract the grasshoppers; Flik and Dot work together to rally the small ants who will manipulate the fake bird to scare away the grasshoppers. However, P.T. Flea sets the bird on fire, mistaking it for a real bird that killed one of his employees. Flik immediately confesses. Hopper has one of his minions, Thumper, attack Flik. Hopeless and with no other options, Flik turns to the circus bugs and the ant colony for help. They back Flik and begin a rebellion that intimidates the grasshopper clan enough to have them flee. Hopper is captured before he is able to fly away a coward. Raindrops suddenly come plummeting down onto the ants; the ants run for shelter. Hopper kidnaps Flik and attempts to evade, only to have Princess Atta intercept him and recover Flik. Flik directs Princess Atta to a nearby bird's nest, where Hopper catches up to the duo. The mother bird snatches Hopper, who is fed to her chicks.

Flik's colony hails him a hero as Princess Atta becomes Queen Atta. In celebratory fashion, they all bid farewell to the circus bugs
